Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza
Toledo, Ohio
Project Details
One of the last major railway terminals constructed in the United States in 1950, the building fell into disrepair as a result of the decline in the rail passenger business. The restoration and redevelopment of Central Union Plaza required substantial exterior, interior and site improvements. The improvements entailed the relocation of Amtrak to the track level with the inclusion of other intermodal transportation facilities. The third and fourth floors were modified to accommodate office operations for the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Goverments (TMACOG) and other potential office users. The third level will be developed for historical display items. The original Amtrak station located in the center of the third floor has been restored as the Grand Lobby, an area to be utilized for receptions and dinners. The area features the existing ticket counters and an original illuminated train board. The second floor was developed for the Lucas County Educational Services offices.
